Fancy giving bellydance a try?

Bellydancing is an excellent way to improve muscle tone, posture, fitness and self-confidence – and it’s great fun too!

Our classes take place in a large mirrored dance studio in St Brelade. We meet most Tuesday evenings throughout the year for an hour from 8pm when club’s most experienced dancers lead sessions in a range of dance styles from the Middle East, from elegant and sensual oriental to fun and earthy folkloric.

You will learn the foundation moves of this ancient, beautiful and joyous art while being introduced to a variety of different dances, from the traditional to the modern.

If you fancy coming to shimmy with us, just get in touch – details are on our contacts page.

FAQs

I’ve never danced before – does that matter?

Not at all! Bellydancing is very natural to the body (we don’t leap about or hyper-extend the joints) and therefore it’s a dance style that’s inclusive of all ages and body shapes.

Do I have to show my belly?

Not if you don’t want to. Wear what you feel comfortable in – just as long as it’s not so loose that you can’t see the movements you are making.

What should I wear?

Wear something comfortable that gives you freedom of movement, but isn’t so baggy that you can’t distinguish the moves. Leggings/jazz pants are fine along with a T-shirt or vest. You can either dance barefoot or with flexible ballet-style pumps or jazz shoes. Shoes that are loose or trainers with grip are not recommended.

How much does it cost?

Classes are £7 for non-members and you can pay as you go. If you decide that you like club and would like to become a Jewel, then there is an annual membership fee of £20. Members pay a reduced fee of £5 and also get a discount on any events we hold, such as workshop weekends and haflas (see the Diary page for more information on what’s coming up).
